Google starts rolling AI Mode into the default search results page
Google has begun rolling AI Mode's conversational, synthesized answers directly into the default search results page for a growing share of query types, rather than keeping them confined to the separate AI Mode tab. The rollout is gradual and query-dependent, concentrated first on informational and comparison-style searches.
What's changing on the results page
- Synthesized answers now appear above traditional blue-link results for eligible queries, similar in position to where AI Overviews already sit, but pulling from AI Mode's more conversational, multi-step reasoning
- Cited sources appear as an expandable panel rather than inline links, a layout change from the earlier AI Overviews format
- The rollout is being A/B tested by query category, so two people searching the same term won't necessarily see the same treatment yet
This is the same click-through-rate pressure the SEO series covers directly — content that answers a query completely in the snippet itself gets cited without the visit. Sites earning meaningful organic traffic from informational, comparison-style queries specifically are the ones most exposed to this rollout, more than sites relying on transactional or navigational search intent.
What's actually worth doing about it
Google's own guidance hasn't changed: content structured to be easily extractable (clear headings, direct answers near the top, genuine depth beyond what a synthesized summary could replicate) continues to perform better in both the traditional and AI-driven surfaces. The real shift is that "ranking well" and "getting the click" are now more clearly two separate outcomes, worth measuring and optimizing for separately rather than assuming one implies the other.
